When imperfections get in the way of your most confident grin, porcelain veneers give your smile the second chance it deserves. Sort of like a dental do-over, veneers work by completely covering the front surface of the teeth that show when you smile. From chips to cracks, gaps and permanent discoloration, you can dramatically improve your smile confidence with transformative porcelain veneers. Keep reading to learn more about this wonderful solution available from the team at Arkansas River Valley Dentistry.
Why Porcelain Veneers
You could choose multiple treatments to correct your smile imperfections one by one, but when multiple or significant problems affect the appearance of your teeth, you’ll find that porcelain veneers offer the most effective, efficient treatment option for full smile confidence.
Dental veneers are incredibly thin coverings made of porcelain. They’re bonded onto the front surface of the imperfect teeth, instantly enhancing or restoring their size, shape and color. Because dental veneers are reserved for cosmetic improvements, they are only used for the front teeth, or those that show when you smile.
Porcelain veneers can enhance the appearance of teeth that have been affected by the following issues:
- Cracks
- Chips
- Staining or discoloration that hasn’t responded to teeth whitening
- Slight gaps or other misalignments
- Misshapen teeth, like those that appear very pointy or too short
Patients should be in good dental and oral health to undergo the treatment for dental veneers. Cases of tooth decay and gum disease should be corrected before undergoing any cosmetic treatment.
Porcelain Veneers: The Procedure
Thanks to the CEREC milling machine we have in-house, the treatment for porcelain veneers can often be completed in just one visit to Arkansas River Valley Dentistry. Your dentist can plan your treatment, prepare your teeth, create and place the veneers all in the same appointment.
A word of advice: to help you successfully communicate your smile goals with your dentist, it can help to bring in photos of what you do and don’t want your veneers to look like. We know not everyone wants a perfect celebrity smile, after all.
Caring for Your New Porcelain Veneers
Once your procedure for porcelain veneers is complete, you’ll find that caring for your new smile isn’t that different from what you’re used to. Continue to brush for two minutes, twice a day. Choose a non-abrasive toothpaste, avoiding whitening and tartar-control blends. (Your porcelain veneers don’t need any sort of whitening treatment, anyway.) In addition to regular brushing, make sure you floss daily and visit your dentist as recommended every six months to maintain the ultimate in dental health.
Special considerations should be taken, however, for athletes and patients who suffer from nighttime teeth grinding, or bruxism. To protect the delicate porcelain from excessive force and impact, your dentist will recommend a custom-fit mouthguard for use during sports and sleep.
